Tools for everyday life
A wide range of technical tools were required in day-to-day life, relating to things such as waking up on time in the morning. How do you know that a baby in the nursery is crying, or that a visitor is ringing the doorbell? The oldest solutions to these problems were often rather ingenious and invented by deaf people themselves. A string poked through the letterbox, or an object that falls at a certain time of day are some of the simplest examples. Some were built at home – others could later be purchased ready-built. Baby monitors are one example of how technical solutions for the deaf have also spread to the hearing community.
